Revised European Training Requirements Set New Standards for Paediatric Rheumatology

Date: 28.10.2026

The updated European Training Requirements for Paediatric Rheumatology bring a stronger focus on competency-based education, clinical practice and patient-centred care.

The updated European Training Requirements (ETR) for Paediatric Rheumatology were presented by Marija Jelušić, Chair of the PReS Education and Training Committee, at the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) Council meeting in Brussels in October 2026 and approved following a Council vote.

The revised ETR mark an important step towards a more competency-based approach to paediatric rheumatology training, with greater emphasis on real-world clinical practice and patient-centred care.

Key updates include alignment with the CanMEDS framework and the integration of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and workplace-based assessment. The revised requirements also place greater emphasis on communication, teamwork, leadership and shared decision-making, alongside multidisciplinary care, lifelong learning and reflective practice.

The document also includes two new appendices. The first describes the EPAs in detail, while the second focuses on the transition from paediatric to adult care, addressing the specific needs of adolescents and young adults living with rheumatic diseases.

The updated ETR provide a common framework to support consistent standards of paediatric rheumatology training across Europe.
