PRES EMERGE NEWSLETTER – SEPTEMBER 2018

Dear PRES EMERGE members,

Welcome to the latest PRES EMERGE newsletter and a particularly warm welcome to our new members. This newsletter will update you on our initiatives and advise you how you can get involved. EMERGE is only as strong as its members and we would welcome everyone to get involved so please get in touch!

NEW EMERGE CHAIR
Dr Lovro Lamot was voted in as our new chair at the EMERGE meeting in Lisbon in September. The terms of the chair were also agreed at the meeting as follows: EMERGE chairs will have a three-year term. The first year they will work with the existing chair and then independently for the second year. At the end of the second year the next EMERGE chair will be elected and so on. The EMERGE chair also acts as the trainee representative on the PReS council.
Dr Eve Smith will therefore work with Dr Lovro Lamot for the next 12 months and we are very excited about the work that will be done under their leadership.

PRES YIM 2018
This year’s YIM meeting was held in Lisbon, Portugal. Sonia Melo Gomes and Raquel Marques, along with the YIM organizing committee organized a fantastic meeting. I am sure that those who were able to join us will agree. The meeting included an inspiring talk from Dr Margarita Geneva on her experience of the first EMERGE fellowship program, as well as talks from CARRA and EMEUNET representatives. We also had very high quality presentations from young investigators. Christoph Kessel from Germany and Gabriella Giancane from Italy won the presentation prizes for best basic science and best clinical presentation respectively.
We are pleased to have the support and enthusiasm of PReS council behind EMERGE and this was evident throughout the main congress. Dr Eve Smith (EMERGE chair) was invited to share details of EMERGE’s work in a plenary session.

UPDATE ON EMERGE INITIATIVES
EMERGE has a number of initiatives that we hope to progress in the coming year. However, we need more EMERGE members to become actively involved to ensure these are successful. Details of who to contact to get involved are in each initiative below. Each subgroup will meet shortly (online teleconference) to decide subgroup leaders and define a plan for the next year.
The structure of EMERGE is continually evolving and developing so if you have new ideas that we have not included here please do get in touch.

Peer Review Mentoring program
This will be a structured program to provide training in peer review. Information on how to apply as a mentee for the peer review mentoring program will be available very soon. More details of how the program works are summarized in this short video: https://youtu.be/vpHB-V1ekts. If you would like to be actively involved in developing this initiative please contact Anita Dhanrajani at anitadhanrajani@gmail.com.

Fellowship program
There will be two further fellowships places available this year (deadline 15th November 2018). The fellowship program is aimed at paediatric rheumatology trainees and young scientists who are members of PReS and younger than 45 years, allowing them to visit a Paediatric Rheumatology Centre within Europe for a period of up to 6 months. There is a short video summarizing how the fellowship program works https://t.co/5bunas50lX. Further details on the application process can be found on the PReS website (/activities/young-investigators/fellowship-programs.html) or by contacting us by email. If you would like to be actively involved in developing and maintain this initiative, please contact Anna Glaser at a.glaser@liverpool.ac.uk.

YIM 2019 – joint with EMEUNET
Next year’s YIM will for the first time will be a joint meeting with EMEUNET. This will be an exciting step forward in adult and paediatric rheumatologists working together. If you would like to be actively involved in the YIM organizing committee please contact Sonia Melo Gomes at sonia.melo.gomes@gmail.com.

EMERGE Ambassadors program
EMERGE would like to introduce this new initiative for the joint EULAR/PReS meeting next year. Experienced PReS congress attendees will informally support young investigators who are attending their first or second meetings to help them get the most out of their time at the congress. If you would like to be actively involved in developing this initiative please contact Raquel Marques at raquelpcmarques@gmail.com.

Educational activities
A number of exciting initiatives are planned in this area. EMERGE works closely with the PReS education committee and is involved in the development of the PReS Academy of Pediatric Rheumatology which will contain many educational opportunities and courses. There are also plans for a “European Knowledge Based Examination and Certification in Paediatric Rheumatology” which aims to launch in 2020. If you would like to be actively involved in these activities please contact Erdal Sag at sag.erdal@gmail.com

Working parties
The roles and activities of the PreS working parties have been updated in the London meeting (June 22, 2018) bringing together all WP chairs, the PreS President Berent Prakken, and members of the PreS Executive Council. The reformed WPs will foster excellence in the three “PreS pillars” as clinical care, science and research, and training and education and will proactively engage with EMERGE in a demonstrable way. If you would like to be actively involved with our work with the working parties please contact Ezgi Deniz Batu at ezgidenizbatu@yahoo.com.

ENCA
EMERGE works closely with ENCA and next year we will be helping them with WOrld young Rheumatic Diseases (WORD) day – March 18th 2019. This is a campaign to help spread the word that children and young people get rheumatic diseases too. If you would like to become actively involved in this initiative, please contact Eve Smith at E.Smith8@liverpool.ac.uk.

Global Relationships
EMERGE is keen to work with all young paediatric rheumatologists and researchers in Europe and beyond. We have already built relationships with EMEUNET and CARRA and hope to develop these and build new relationships. If you would like to be actively involved in this initiative please contact Lovro Lamot at lovro.lamot@gmail.com.

Membership and Social Media
EMERGE is expanding rapidly and we now have over 90 members from all over the world. Membership is free and all young paediatric rheumatologists or scientists are welcome to join. Members will receive newsletters and be kept updated with current opportunities and courses. Members are also welcome to get actively involved in any of EMERGE’s initiatives. Please email emerge.pres@gmail.com if you wish to join the group.
